Family reunification

Family reunification

The right to family reunification is granted to a foreigner holding a permanent residence permit and to a foreigner who has resided in Slovenia for the last year on the basis of a temporary residence permit issued with a validity of at least one year (Article 47 of ZTuj-2). Among others, EU Blue Card holders, researchers and higher education teachers, digital nomads and foreigners of Slovenian descent up to the second degree can be joined by their family without a waiting period. Seasonal workers and cross-border workers do not have the right to family reunification.

A minor unmarried child may join their parents regardless of how long they have resided in Slovenia, provided that both parents (or the guardian, or the parent to whom the child has been entrusted) hold a temporary residence permit (Article 47 of ZTuj-2).

Family members include, in particular:

  • a spouse, a partner in a civil partnership or civil union, or a partner with whom the foreigner is in a long-term relationship;
  • the minor unmarried children of the foreigner and of their spouse or partner;
  • the parents of a minor foreigner;
  • adult unmarried children and parents whom the foreigner or their spouse or partner is obliged to maintain.

The foreigner must prove sufficient means of subsistence for the family members. For the extension of the permit, an adult family member must, as a rule, prove knowledge of Slovenian at survival level (with exceptions, e.g. for persons over 60 and for family members of foreigners who can be joined by their family without a waiting period).
